Board holds first reading to fold student ex officio position into policy 1210

The STARPOINT CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT Board of Education conducted a first reading to add parameters for a student ex officio member within Board of Education Policy 1210 (nomination and election of board members). The recommended change follows guidance from Erie 1 BOCES policy services, officials said.
Miss Spacher explained that the state recommended districts have a student ex officio member and that Erie 1 BOCES has suggested incorporating the student-ex-officio language into the existing nomination-and-election policy rather than keeping a separate policy. “When the state came out with a recommendation for all schools to have a student ex officio member, they came out with a policy… it is being recommended by our Erie 1 BOCES policy services to incorporate the student ex officio position into the actual board member nomination election policy,” Spacher said.
Board members were told the change provides guidance on the parameters of the student ex officio role and does not replace the required second reading and vote. Administrators said the next meeting will include a second reading; if adopted, the district will delete the separate student-ex-officio policy (identified in the discussion as policy 1211).
No vote was taken at this meeting; the item is scheduled for a second reading at the next regular board meeting.
