Mayor Clea McCaw read a city proclamation on May 8 declaring the municipality's participation in National Small Business Week and praising locally owned small businesses as an economic foundation for the community.
Economic Development staff cited national Small Business Administration statistics and presented Franco's Barbershop as Sierra Vista's Small Business of the Year. Staff noted the SBA reports roughly 34.7 million small businesses nationally and described Sierra Vista as home to many entrepreneurs and small employers. "Small businesses are lifeblood of The US and our local economies," the Economic Development speaker said.
The city presented the award to Eddie Franco and invited his wife, Lorinda, and guests. Staff recognized Franco's decades of service to the Fort and Sierra Vista community—service estimated in the presentation at 63 years with 34 years as owner of his West End shop. Lorinda Franco addressed the council and thanked clients and family; she said the business has long relationships with customers and spoke emotionally about family loss while accepting the recognition.
Council members congratulated Franco's Barbershop and encouraged community support for small businesses during National Small Business Week and beyond.
