Manhasset student council leaders honored for service at board meeting

The Manhasset Union Free School District board recognized student council leaders from Munsey Park and Shelter Rock for projects that included indoor-recess options, book and coat drives, spirit days and other community-facing activities.
Michael Haukis, a sixth grader at Munsey Park Elementary School and the Munsey Park student council president, described the council’s accomplishments, including new indoor-recess games purchased for rainy days, a coat drive and a book drive organized with the Munsey Park Kindness Club. “The student council has proven to be a tremendously rewarding experience for me personally and for my fellow classmates,” Haukis told the board.
School staff thanked advisors and coaches for supporting the students. Board members and attendees congratulated the students and encouraged them to attend the remainder of the meeting or celebrate with their families.
The board also recognized Shelter Rock student leaders — Valentina Caluzzo, Sofia Landon and Abigail Pangburn — for their leadership and community service projects, and acknowledged student-executive-board roles including vice president Matthew Palumbo, co-secretary Jax Matana and other student officers.
