Public Works update: Damson reconstruction complete, Rose Street lights planned, Well 8 yields improve

Public Works Director McCandridge gave a verbal update on municipal public-works projects under staff oversight.
“Damson Avenue reconstruction project is complete,” McCandridge said, noting only minor warranty items remain. He said the post office crosswalk project is essentially complete, with a final restriping punch list item requested by the funding agency (WSDOT). McCandridge said the city has pre-purchased lighting for Rose Street and is concluding a right-of-way acquisition for the lighting on the east end of the corridor; installation will proceed after right-of-way is finalized.
On Johnier Road (the transcript references the larger north–south collector project as Mjolnir/Majjan/Majolnir in different places), McCandridge said right-of-way acquisition is well underway with several parcels signed and paid and others close to completion; staff aim to complete acquisitions this summer and obligate construction funds before the federal fiscal-year deadline so the project can advertise this fall and construct in early next year.
McCandridge described the newly drilled water well (identified in the meeting as Well 8, formerly Well 7). Initial yields were poor; after additional development by a second driller, yields increased from about 50 gallons per minute to over 500 gpm and the city expects further development to improve yields toward 700 gpm. Once final testing and development are complete, the well-house design will move forward.
Public Works also plans a Whitman multiuse pathway project: staff will advertise an RFQ in early June to select a consultant, with design targeted for completion in spring next year. McCandridge said Southeast Eighth sidewalk design is nearing completion and expected to advertise for bids in September for winter construction.
McCandridge closed by noting May is National Public Works Week and described planned public engagement and staff events including plant tours, a school visit, a coloring contest and a staff barbecue.
Commissioners thanked Public Works for the updates and asked no substantive questions at the time.
