The Niagara Falls City School District said May 8 it is conducting independent environmental testing of district facilities and continuing daily monitoring after community concerns linked to operations at a nearby Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company site.
Superintendent Mark Lohrey said facilities staff had been monitoring filters and building exteriors "long before this issue became prominent" and that the district engaged Stoll Environmental to perform independent sampling. Lohrey told the board the district expects results in roughly three weeks and is coordinating with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Department of Health (DOH).
Lohrey urged community members to use state resources for questions: he cited the DEC web mailbox for Goodyear-related inquiries and provided the DOH phone number (718-402-7800) district staff received from state officials. He said the district is "going above and beyond" by running its own tests and maintaining communications with both state agencies to protect students, staff and neighbors while results are pending.
No test results were available at the meeting and the district emphasized it would share findings with the community when received. District staff confirmed daily building-filter checks and said they will continue working with state agencies and provide updates to the board.
