Commission approves $20,000 cultural allocation to Warbird Museum amid debate over TDC funds and fiscal priorities

The Brevard County commission approved a $20,000 allocation to support the Warbird Museum’s event-center project by a 3-2 vote on May 6, drawing debate over the appropriate use of tourism development (TDC) and marketing-support funds while the county faces fiscal pressures.

Commissioner Delaney explained she sought to allocate her full $20,000 cultural allotment to the museum, which is completing an event center and reported a funding shortfall after the death of a major supporter. The motion passed 3-2; Vice Chair Goodson and Commissioner Atkinson voted no, while Commissioners Delaney, Altman and Chairman Feltner voted yes.

TDC staff member Peter noted the board can allocate TDC/marketing-support funds at its discretion, saying, “the board could take any action that they desired re related to this, so as long as the board voted for it, they they could do it.” Other public speakers urged caution. Sandra Sullivan recommended the board hold funds until the state legislature resolves a bill that could allow TDC tax flexibility, including up to 25% to be used for public-safety or property-tax relief.
