Kevin Warner, director of the recreation and parks department, described a slate of park renovations and facility upgrades intended to improve accessibility and programming.
Warner said Highland Park and Bend Park are undergoing comprehensive renovations to improve infrastructure, safety and accessibility. He said the department is in the planning phase for a new swimming pool to meet demand for aquatic lessons and fitness programs.
Warner described upgrades to the dog park at Park Back Ridge including shade, agility equipment and expanded seating. He said Richardson Park received $600,000 in improvements for playground equipment, landscaping and amenities. Warner added that the MLK Center recently completed a $1,000,000 HVAC overhaul funded entirely through grants to ensure a comfortable environment for programs.
Warner said sports-league participation has grown about 10% annually over the past five years. He framed those changes as part of a broader goal to expand recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.
