Natchitoches Fire Department reports new equipment, grant for outreach and design work on Station 3

John Wynne, fire chief for the Natchitoches Fire Department, reported upgrades and ongoing plans to expand emergency capacity, saying the department responded to 3,214 calls in 2024 and saw a 4.8% increase in call volume.

Wynne outlined recent equipment and program investments that city leaders said are intended to maintain response capacity as the city grows. "In 2024, we've made key improvements to enhance our capabilities. Number 1 is the new central fire station generator," Wynne said, and he listed new bunker gear, air packs, thermal imagers and the start of design work for a new Fire Station 3.

The department also received a $57,000 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) for prevention resources, Wynne said. He described that grant as funding a fire prevention trailer, a fire extinguisher trainer and outreach materials, including an "Ashley alligator" mascot for community events.

Wynne said the Station 3 project is now in the design phase and is intended to reduce response times and increase coverage for that area of the city. He did not provide a construction schedule or a guaranteed start date but said the design work has begun.

The presentation framed the investments as part of wider public-safety priorities discussed across multiple departments during the address. City leaders thanked firefighters and highlighted the department's outreach work in fire prevention education.

Looking ahead, Wynne said continued investment in training, staffing and equipment will be needed to maintain response times and service levels. He closed by thanking city leadership and the community for ongoing support.
