Commissioners let LWCF park grant lapse after debate over scope and match requirements

Meriwether County staff revisited a potential Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant on May 5 and recommended a passive-park scope that would include grassy open space, an ADA-compliant walking trail, ADA parking and restroom facilities. Staff said the grant structure required a 50% county match and that estimated project costs could approach $400,000 depending on scope and soil/erosion work for a walking trail.

Several commissioners said they were reluctant to accept a grant that would lock the county into a scope that might not align with longer-term plans for the property. One commissioner recommended the board develop a clear master plan for the site before accepting a federal grant limited to passive uses. After discussion, the board voted to allow the grant to expire rather than accept the current scope and match requirements; staff noted the county could reapply later with a different scope if desired.
