Sedalia approves fee waivers to back Helping Hands home-repair nonprofit

The Sedalia City Council voted to authorize targeted fee waivers to support Sedalia Community Helping Hands, a volunteer nonprofit that performs exterior repairs for low-income, elderly and disabled homeowners.
Council members approved Resolution 21-30, which waives up to $600 in city-imposed container rental and landfill tipping fees during fiscal year 2025–2026 for qualifying projects within the 353 redevelopment area, and Resolution 21-31, which waives building permit fees up to $4,000 for eligible projects through April 6, 2026. Both measures passed on motions and recorded affirmative votes.
Robin Balkia, communications coordinator for Sedalia Community Helping Hands, told the council the group has assisted 53 homeowners in the past 14 months, works primarily Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon, and prioritizes homes with city code violations or pending court notices. "In the past 14 months, we've been able to assist 53 homeowners with their repairs," Balkia said. She asked the council to waive building permit, dumpster and disposal fees to allow donations to go further toward materials.
Staff and the mayor proposed the waivers as targeted support within the redevelopment area. The container waiver requires that requests be submitted at least one week in advance. The permit-fee waiver is effective immediately upon passage and remains valid through April 6, 2026. The council approved both resolutions with no recorded opposition.
