A Spalding County volunteer board canceled its scheduled meeting after failing to reach a quorum, meeting participants said.
Speaker 1, a meeting participant, announced the cancellation: "Yes, sir. Okay. Everyone is 5 minutes after. We do not have a quorum at this time, so we're gonna have to cancel, tonight's meeting."
Newton, a meeting participant, told the group he had received an email that a member named David would not join by Zoom and asked whether a quorum was present. "I just saw an email from David that he is not going to be able to join by Zoom. Is that correct?" he asked.
Speaker 3, a meeting participant, said members were absent because of graduation events and described the board as unpaid volunteers. "That is correct. Yes, sir. Okay. We're we're struggling to get a quorum this evening because of, the graduation issues that are going on this week. I think we've got few colleges and high schools that are going through graduation, and we're just struggling to get to get the quorum," Speaker 3 said. Later Speaker 3 added, "We're very sorry about that. This board is a volunteer board, so they do not get paid. And sometimes life events happen and we struggle to get a quorum, and unfortunately, that's, that's the case that we have found ourselves in this evening."
Attendees were told the meeting would be rescheduled and that follow-up about the new date would be handled by Mr. Allen. "I will follow-up with mister Allen, and he will be in contact with you and let you know when the next meeting can occur," Speaker 3 said. Because the meeting was canceled, no formal actions, motions, or votes were taken and no agenda items were addressed.
The cancellation occurred during the pre-meeting quorum check; participants said several members were attending graduations at colleges and high schools in the area, which prevented the board from reaching its required attendance threshold.
