The Rock Springs City Council voted to approve the City’s preliminary budget for the fiscal period ending June 30, 2026, while acknowledging the budget removes a line item for the Sweetwater County Economic Development Coalition.
Council discussion flagged the elimination under nondepartmental funds. Councilor Zotti, speaking as the Sweetwater County land use director, told the council he had sent correspondence noting the city’s removal of the Coalition from the preliminary budget and urged the Budget Committee to reconsider between the preliminary and final budgets.
Councilors emphasized that the preliminary budget can be adjusted prior to the final vote in June. One councilor said the city has “plenty of money” but faces more needs than available funds and that council priorities will determine reallocations.
Several councilors recommended exploring a joint funding approach with Sweetwater County and Green River rather than cutting the Coalition immediately. One councilor suggested regional contributions that would increase the Coalition’s capacity to recruit and support businesses, citing a recent recruitment of a manufacturing firm by the Coalition.
Council members agreed to revisit the Coalition funding before the final budget vote; one councilor clarified there may be a special budget meeting in early June to consider adjustments. The motion to approve the preliminary budget carried with one abstention recorded.
