Coconut Creek honors elementary and middle school students at 16th annual awards ceremony

Coconut Creek officials and families gathered at City Hall for the 16th annual student awards ceremony recognizing elementary and middle school students selected by their teachers for academic achievement, leadership and character.
Bernadette Hughes, the city’s government affairs manager, said the students being called were chosen “by their teachers for excellence in academics, leadership, and character over the past year.” Students from Coconut Creek Elementary, Liberty Elementary, Tradewinds Elementary, Winston Park Elementary, Lions Creek Middle School and Margate Middle School were called to the stage to receive certificates and awards.
State Representative Christine Hunchofsky, who represents District 95, spoke at the event and thanked families and educators for their role supporting students. “I’m so honored to be here,” Hunchofsky said, adding that she preferred attending the ceremony to remaining at the extended legislative session in Tallahassee.
Elementary students received trophies and middle school students received acrylic butterfly awards, per Hughes. City staff photographed each group on the dais with commissioners and invited parents to join them for photos after each school’s recognitions.
The ceremony closed with brief remarks from city leaders thanking students and families and wishing them a safe summer. The commission then moved to adjourn, and the meeting was declared adjourned.
