DEP approves $268,000 Green Acres matching grant for Moses Tunde Trail project, FOA told

Friends of West Windsor Open Space (FOA) received a notification from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection that the FOA application for a Green Acres matching grant was approved for $268,000, FOA representatives told the council during public comment.
Michael Schuette, acting president of FOA, read a letter addressed to Allison Miller from NJDEP commissioner Sean LaTourette informing FOA of the approval and noting the funding is contingent upon the passage of a legislative appropriation. The letter says DEP staff will contact FOA to guide the group through implementation.
The project — described at public hearings earlier this year as the Moses Tunde Trail — would create a historic trail approximately one quarter mile from Penley Road to the Jacob extension, placed on top of an existing sewer line. In the meeting Schuette said the grant approval is a significant step and congratulated the community and volunteers who supported the application.
Mayor (West Windsor Township) and administration staff acknowledged FOA’s work. The mayor and administration previously committed a municipal matching contribution of roughly $168,000 toward the project, administration staff said during the meeting, and Schuette said DEP staff will follow up with FOA to advance the project pending legislative appropriation.
The FOA representative read the approval letter in full and councilmembers thanked the volunteers for their work securing the conditional award.
