Southside High highlights April with spring musical, honor society inductions, science fair and DECA international placement

Southside High School staff and students recapped a busy April that included the spring musical Newsies, several honor‑society inductions, a science symposium, a blood drive and a DECA international competition placement.

The month began and continued with a string of student activities and recognitions that school officials said showcased academic, artistic and service achievements across grade levels.

The school’s theater program staged a spring production of Newsies; the host thanked Dr. Demben, Dr. Freiling and Mr. D'Ambrosio and other staff for supporting students during the show. The Best Buddies Club installed a mosaic on the second‑floor hallway near the core classrooms; staff advisors credited both special‑education and general‑education students for the collaborative artwork.

On April 22, the World Language Honor Society held an induction ceremony recognizing students for achievement in Spanish and French. The school also hosted an intergenerational sharing conference on April 23, when members of the Sandell Center visited the high school to meet students for games, dancing and conversation.

The spring blood drive took place on April 25. “This is always a fantastic event where our students and staff show their selflessness and care and concern for others,” the host said, thanking Miss Marshall and Miss Figurito for facilitating the drive.

The Science Symposium and Science Fair on April 28 showcased research by science‑research students and ninth‑ and tenth‑grade experimenters and projects. The National Art Honor Society induction occurred on April 29. On April 30, the school inducted more than 30 students into the National Honor Society, which the host described as recognizing students across scholarship, service, leadership and character; Miss Kelly and Miss Ferrara were thanked for leading the program.

Southside High sent 17 students to the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Orlando for the DECA competition. The host singled out Ella Burbage, who placed in the top 10 internationally in her category; the host said that placement was a first in Southside history.

The school also held its annual first‑grade woodshop visit, where students from elementary schools came to the high school for a spring planter project, and other student activities such as murals and senior award events were announced.
