Tooele City Council ratified an agreement with Excel General Contracting on May 7 to demolish a city-owned building at 126 North Broadway; demolition work was scheduled to begin on Monday following the meeting.
Economic Development Director John Perez said the city’s approach — including targeted environmental testing — reduced the expected demolition and remediation cost by roughly $340,000 compared with a previously recommended “gold standard” method. Perez said because Excel is a state-approved contractor, the procurement did not require a competitive bidding process under city policy for work above the city’s $30,000 procurement threshold.
Perez said the city obtained additional environmental testing on the building interior that removed some contaminants of concern and that the contractor will proceed with demolition. Council voted 5-0 to ratify the agreement.
