The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors approved an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the Arizona State Parks Board on May 6 to continue cooperative operation and maintenance of the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park through 2028, with renewal options that could extend the term.
Under the agreement described by staff, the county will provide $15,000 annually and will pay utility costs that exceed $12,000. Officials said the county first stepped in to keep the Presidio open after fiscal pressure on State Parks following the recession; the current IGA continues that cooperative arrangement. County staff said the park also benefits from volunteer operations and local citizen support.
Supervisors thanked county staff, park volunteers and local citizens for the Presidio’s year‑round visitor offerings. County staff offered to invite Arizona State Parks to present visitor counts and discuss long‑term obligations for the park at a future meeting. The board approved the IGA unanimously.
