Organizers of a Sunbury pride festival told the Sunbury City Parks and Recreation Committee on May 7 they want to hold a family‑oriented event on the square and are working through the city’s permit process. "We're beginners at this. We kinda showed up last year and didn't go through the city, but we very much wanna do it right," Mary McGavick said.
Committee members and staff reviewed the permit form and raised logistical issues including restrooms, trash pickup and a first‑aid plan. Chief Howard of the police department flagged the absence of a first‑aid plan. "His main concern was there is no first aid plan in place yet," a staff member said summarizing the police response. The organizers told the committee they would work to secure a first‑aid practitioner, such as Red Cross personnel, and to address restroom and trash arrangements.
Staff asked organizers to be responsive while finalizing details because the application arrived later in the review process. "So we appreciate you working with us. We just ask that whoever you're main person is just responsive to Amber," a committee member said. Organizers said they do not plan to charge admission and do not expect major vendor sales, though they asked about small sales or giveaways such as stickers; staff said vendors are allowed in public spaces when permitted and noted the city monitors commercial use of public space.
No permit decision was recorded at the meeting; staff and organizers agreed to continue coordinating. "It is coming in a little bit late. It's not a problem," a committee member said, and staff will continue to work with the organizers to finalize safety and logistics before the event.
