Senate committee advances several memorial highway and bridge namings

BATON ROUGE, La. — The Senate Committee on Transportation and Public Works on Thursday advanced multiple House bills to designate highways and bridges as memorials for military service members and a local police chief.
Representative McFarland presented House Bill 174 to designate a bridge in honor of Specialist Clayton James Horn, who "ended his call of duty on August 2019 at the young age of 23," McFarland said. "Specialist Horn was known for his professionalism and his commitment to the mission," the representative added. The committee moved the bill favorably without objection; Senator McMath made the motion and members were asked to sign on as co-authors.
Representative Sylvia Taylor introduced House Bill 167 to designate a portion of Louisiana Highway 3188 in LaPlace as the Veterans Memorial Highway. Taylor brought veterans from American Legion Post 383 to the hearing; Michael Anthony of Post 383 said the designation would "give us the veterans recognition throughout the state as well as the United States." Senator Cloud moved the bill favorably, and the committee advanced it without objection.
The committee also considered a renaming of Louisiana Highway 466 in Gretna to "Chief B. H. Miller Jr. Memorial Parkway." Representative Cox said the renamed route would pass in front of the Gretna Police Department complex and asked for favorable approval. The committee adopted several technical and piggyback amendments requested by other representatives, then voted to report the bill favorably as amended without objection.
