School board honors student representative Inka Shannon and district retirees

The Fairbanks North Star Borough School Board recognized North Pole High School student Inka Shannon for his service as the board’s student representative and announced the district’s annual retiree recognitions.
Board members praised Shannon’s student leadership and his work to amplify other student voices. Colonel Foster, speaking as a board member and Air Force representative, congratulated Shannon on his Air Force Academy nomination and encouraged him as he prepares for service. "Your consistent preparation and thoughtful engagement ... have been truly impressive," Superintendent Dr. Meinert said.
The district also honored staff members who have retired or submitted notice to retire this year. Administration listed dozens of individual retirees by name and role during a formal recognition segment. At the start of the recognition the district said 35 staff members had already retired or planned to retire this school year and that the group represented 748 years of district employment; later in the superintendent’s remarks he referenced a different cumulative figure, saying the district is "losing over 856 years of service." The administration noted those totals measure years with the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, not total years in education, and that retirement gifts would be delivered to staff prior to the end of the school term.
Board members, administrators and families thanked retirees for their service and extended best wishes.
