Commission approves full rebuild of Atlantic Avenue pavilion; staff says structure will be replaced on same footprint

The Delray Beach City Commission approved authorization to demolish and rebuild the Atlantic Avenue pavilion, after staff recommended a full replacement rather than piecemeal repairs.
Cynthia Belzant, assistant director of public works, told the commission the existing pavilion components have limited salvageable value once disassembled and that a complete rebuild on the same footprint is more cost‑effective. She said the new structure will use 3/16 stainless‑steel fasteners and other lessons learned from the previous build to increase longevity in the corrosive coastal environment.
Staff estimated the bulk of physical construction would take roughly six months, with final closeout and commissioning extending to about a year. The commission unanimously approved the resolution authorizing the project.
Commissioners asked whether the footprint would change (staff confirmed it would not) and whether the reconstruction offered an opportunity to add program or rentable space (staff replied the project scope is replacement on the existing footprint). Funding for the project was on the agenda item under the consent portion and commissioners approved the measure as presented.
