Parks board approves agreement with Thurston County Pickleball Club to resurface Rainier Vista courts

The Lacey Parks, Culture and Recreation Board voted May 7 to approve a memorandum of understanding with the Thurston County Pickleball Club for resurfacing tennis courts at Rainier Vista Park.
City staff described the courts as needing attention and said the club hosts tournaments that use the facility as overflow. The club requested repairs in time for its largest event, the Washington State Senior Games, a four-day regional tournament in August. Under the proposed agreement the club will pay for the project in lieu of court rental fees over the next five years; staff estimated the equivalent value of those fees at about $33,000.
"We calculated, and we think that the rental fees over 5 years would be about 33,000," said Jenny Wilson, the city’s senior parks planner. In exchange the club will receive nine days of court use over five years as part of the swap. City staff said the resurfacing project is already on the parks capital improvement program and the club-funded arrangement would complete the work at no cost to the city.
Board members discussed whether similar private funding proposals would be handled differently if an MPD is formed; staff said typical requests not already on the capital improvement list would be reviewed normally and could receive a lower priority. The board approved the memorandum by unanimous voice vote.
Staff said the project schedule aims to have the repairs completed before the August tournament; construction details and final scheduling will be managed by parks staff and the maintenance team.
