Local partners announce free mental health first aid class May 28

Aisha Alayande, representing Heartland Core Wellness, announced a Mental Health First Aid class scheduled for 9 a.m. on May 28 at South Florida State College during public comment at the May 7 Sebring City Council meeting.
Alayande said the training, developed in partnership with AdventHealth and South Florida State College, certifies participants for three years and teaches how to identify behavioral cues in adults and children and how to connect people in crisis to appropriate help. She described the course as similar to CPR training for mental health and said registration is free; materials and local resource lists will be available through the city's administration and community partners.
Mayor Shupe had previously proclaimed May as Mental Health Awareness Month, Alayande noted, and she urged residents to "speak and act in love" and to participate in the training. The council did not take any formal action during the public comment; Alayande said sign-up information would be available at City Hall and through community partners.
