Christopher Hassig was sworn in May 5 as Stillwaters new chief of police after a nationwide search, city leaders said, and he addressed the council and public at the ceremonial portion of the meeting.
Deputy City Manager Christy Driscoll summarized the multi-stage selection process, which included video interviews, in-person panels with community stakeholders and a department-wide interview with sworn staff. Driscoll said the process was competitive and that candidates were evaluated by city leadership and community representatives.
Hassig told the council he has more than 18 years of experience with the Houston Police Department, where he managed units including homicide and special investigations and supervised more than 60 personnel. "The three tenets that I really strongly believe in are presence out in the community, partnerships, both public and private, and then professionalism," Hassig said. He said he looks forward to community engagement at schools, parks and events.
Mayor William Joyce and other leaders thanked the selection team and welcomed the new chief. Hassig said his family will relocate to Stillwater around Memorial Day weekend and that he looks forward to joining the community.
No council vote was recorded at the May 5 ceremonial swearing-in; city staff said a nationwide recruitment and multi-stage selection produced the hire earlier in the day.
