Palm Desert Charter Middle School presented an annual update to the Desert Sands Unified board on May 6, 2025 that emphasized student leadership development, performing arts, competitive color guard achievements and athletics.
Interim principal Alan Layman introduced leadership students who described personal growth through ASB and extracurricular programs. Student speakers Charlie Betts, Dominic Valdez and ASB President Tessa Newton recounted how participation in leadership, athletics and after‑school programs helped them build confidence, teamwork and public speaking skills.
Staff and student presenters highlighted performing arts and media efforts: art classes, yearbook production, drama and after‑school plays, an expanded dance PE program with four levels (beginning through elite), and a color guard that has competed at national events (WGI/Dayton) and returned as regional finalists. Teachers framed these activities as opportunities to build student skills in public performance, collaboration and resilience.
The program included a short video prepared by media staff (noted in the meeting) and trustees thanked students and staff for their presentations. No board action was requested; the presentation was informational.
