City awards $1.65 million contract for Southeast 240th walk path and site drainage improvements

The Kent City Council on May 6 approved a construction contract for the Southeast 240th Street walk path and site drainage improvements, a project tied to the East Hill operations center site frontage.
Public Works Director Chad Barron told the council the work includes frontage improvements along Southeast 240th, excavation for a stormwater detention pond and other civil work related to the operations center. Barron said the city received 13 bids for the project and recommended award to Active Construction Inc., which had a low bid of $1,654,654.
"We went out to advertisement, had 13 bids, which is a lot for us," Barron said. He told council the low bid was below the engineer—s estimate of just over $2,000,000 and noted that more contractors are bidding work as some federal funding has slowed but tariffs and other costs still affect prices.
Council approved the award and authorized the mayor to sign documents, subject to final terms acceptable to the city attorney, parks director and public works director. The motion passed 6-0.
Why it matters: The work will complete much of the frontage and stormwater detention improvements necessary for the East Hill operations center and move forward civil site improvements the city identified when the building project was bid.
Next steps: Staff will finalize contract documents and begin construction work under the awarded contract.
