Council approves $7,000 security grant for Morris Heights cameras under city incentive program

The Statesboro Mayor and Council approved an application May 6 by Morris Heights (listed in the agenda as Bob LLC) for $7,000 under the city’s Security Enhancement Incentive Program to fund security cameras and related equipment.
City staff told the council the program covers up to 50% of eligible project costs. For the Morris Heights installation, the bid presented to the council was $13,985, and staff recommended the $7,000 award, which is slightly less than half of the bid amount. Staff noted the program does not pay more than 50% of a project’s cost.
Mister Penn described the proposal as four or five cameras to cover blind spots identified by residents. Council members said the program has been successful and that adding cameras should help make neighborhoods safer. There was no extended debate; the council voted to approve the award subject to fulfillment of eligibility requirements.
The award will be paid only after staff confirms all eligibility requirements and project invoices. City staff said the grant is intended to incentivize property owners to install gates, cameras and other security measures to reduce crime and increase neighborhood safety.
