Florida DEP takes septic permitting statewide; Suwannee County told to route septic system permits through regional portal starting Aug. 1

Suwannee County staff told commissioners Wednesday that the Florida Department of Environmental Protection will move many septic permit functions from local control to a state-run portal and regional processing beginning Aug. 1.
Public works staff described the new process as an online application portal that routes permit requests to regional DEP offices; for Suwannee County the region will be administered from Columbia County and will include Madison, Hamilton, Columbia, Suwannee, Lafayette and Taylor counties. County staff said the DEP indicated about five business days for new construction permit review and about three days for repair reviews, and that the local environmental health office will remain the point of contact for nuisance complaints in the field.
Public works staff and commissioners discussed how the change could affect local applicants. County staff warned that, under the new process, the county may issue building permits as before but could wait for a DEP final before issuing a certificate of occupancy. Staff said DEP would provide a QR code and other contact details to post in county offices and online to guide residents to the new filing portal.
Commissioners asked staff to post clear instructions and make informational flyers available in county lobbies to avoid confusion. No vote or formal action was taken; commissioners asked staff to continue communication with DEP and post public guidance ahead of the August start date.
