Board approves removal of SR-70 restriction from Gettler borrow-pit permit and updates haul routes

The Board approved a petition from Gettler Brothers to modify a Class 2 mining permit by removing a special condition that had limited delivered excavated material to the State Road 70 widening project. County staff and the county engineer recommended approval, noting the SR-70 widening is complete and that the remaining permitted mineral material should be allowed to go to other lawful destinations along designated haul routes.
County Engineer Dan Suralik explained the permit history: the borrow pit received approvals in 2006 and was expanded under a 2012 permit that included a special condition restricting deliveries to the SR-70 widening. That SR-70 project was completed in 2014, and Gettler requested removal of the restriction so materials could be used for other public- and private-sector projects. Suralik summarized staff review and recommended approval with a defined set of approved haul routes and an explicit list of county roads that remain excluded as thoroughfares unless the delivery destination is on one of those local roads.
The updated haul routes approved by the Board include State Road 70, Midway Road and Glades Cutoff Road. The Board also reaffirmed that county substandard roads would not be used as haul routes, and specifically excluded Carlton Road, Snead Road, Shinn Road, Brock Smith Road, Hatter Canal Road, 11 Mile Road and McCarty Road from general hauling unless the final delivery address is on those roads.
Staff said the change aligns the permit with current county and state freight networks and does not conflict with the comprehensive plan. There was no public comment. The revision to the Class 2 mining permit was approved by the Board.
