Lake Monticello residents ask county to press VDOT for larger gate signage after visitor safety incidents

Lake Monticello residents asked Fluvanna supervisors May 7 to seek larger, clearer directional signage at two gated lake entrances after multiple visitor safety incidents.
Charles Domino of the Lake Monticello Safety and Security Committee showed photos of small gate signs at the Tufton Gate on Route 53 and the Riverside Gate on Route 600. Domino said visitors following GPS or unfamiliar hosts are directed to those gates, encounter small 'barcode only' signs and are forced to reverse into Route 53 or Route 600 when they cannot enter. He requested the board intercede with VDOT to replace the small signs with larger directional signage such as standard VDOT arrow placards.
Supervisors said they would check with Scott Thornton at VDOT about sign authority and the possibility of locating larger signs on lake easements or county right-of-way. Board members also discussed prior options VDOT considered — including making the Tufton gate right-in/right-out — and the cost and feasibility of alternate entrances. No formal board action was taken; staff and supervisors said they would follow up with VDOT and the Lake Monticello board.
