Board approves reclassification of emergency services positions as county prepares to hire fire and EMS chief

The Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors on May 7 approved changes to job descriptions and classifications in the Emergency Services and Emergency Management offices as the county prepares to hire a chief of fire and EMS.
County staff said the board had budgeted a chief of fire and EMS position for fiscal year 2026 and recommended reclassifying the current director of emergency services to an EMS supervisor and downgrading the emergency management coordinator position to an emergency management generalist. Staff explained that some functions in existing job descriptions no longer matched the county’s structure after prior staffing changes and that updated pay bands would reflect the revised responsibilities.
If the board approves the chief of fire and EMS position in a future meeting, staff said the EMS supervisor and emergency management generalist would report to that chief. The county presented estimated pay-band minimums for the reclassified positions and said the FY26 budget appropriation could support hiring the revised staffing structure. The board voted 5-0 to approve the job description updates and reclassifications.
