A council Rules, Confirmations & Public Elections committee on May 13 accepted a late-filed tobacco use prevention and control grant from the Tennessee Department of Health and unanimously approved a resolution to accept the funds.
Council Chair Aaron Evans read a letter from the Department of Health explaining the filing was late because of a contract modification and a delay at the law department. "The time period covered by the grant began on 04/01/2025, and the grantor has a policy that requires the grama to be returned prior to the start date," Evans read into the record.
The committee voted to suspend its rules to consider the late-filed resolution and then voted to accept the grant. The suspension of rules passed 7-0, and the vote on the resolution was likewise recorded as unanimous.
The grant was described in the resolution as intended "to improve the health of citizens of Davidson County and prevent and control the use of tobacco." Committee members did not debate the grant's programmatic details during the meeting; the record notes the reason for the late filing as a contract modification to update the public health director information and a delay in the law department.
The committee took no further action on program implementation at the meeting. Any follow-up on spending, program metrics, or reporting deadlines was not specified during the discussion and would be handled through the Metropolitan Board of Health and the city’s grant administration processes.
