St. Louis County Historical Society thanks county, asks for lease extension for museum collections

Ganaway read a motion passed by the society's board of governors: “The St. Louis County Historical Society extends its appreciation for St. Louis County's current financial support for the temporary storage of the society's museum collections at 230 West Superior Street, Duluth, and passes a motion of support for the county to extend the terms of the lease to give the society an opportunity to strategize a long term storage solution.”
The request matters, Ganaway said, because the temporary storage is “an important bridge” during a period of transition while the society develops a strategy for stewardship and care of collections. He said the society completed a museum assessment program administered by the American Alliance of Museums and the Institute for Museum and Library Services and that the assessment produced a “long list of recommendations.” “I think it was a great move to require the historical society to undergo it,” Ganaway said, adding the society regards its collections stewardship as “exemplary by industry standards.”
Ganaway said the society plans to apply to private foundations to fund a broad-based strategic planning process and hopes to complete that planning by the end of the year if private funding is available. He offered a prepared letter for the county board and said he would share it if desired.
No action by the St. Louis County Board of Commissioners on the society's request was recorded during the public comment period. The society's motion was passed internally by its board of governors and was presented to the county as a formal expression of appreciation and a request for a lease extension; the county did not announce any decision on that request at the meeting.
