Resident presses council to hire full-time internal auditor; manager says position is in budget and interviews set

During public comment on May 7, Scott Lewis urged the council to hire a full-time internal auditor and to ensure the auditor reports to the council rather than city management. He also said minutes from the city’s audit committee meeting last September had not been circulated to the council.
City Manager Jonathan Evans told the council the internal-auditor position is included in the budget and that staff had an interview scheduled the next day for the vacancy. Evans also said staff would provide the audit-committee minutes and the audit ordinance that prescribes audit authority so council members could review committee actions and reporting lines. The clerk confirmed the audit-committee minutes would be included on the next city council meeting agenda and that copies would be provided to council members.
Council members asked staff to consider how the auditor would report and whether an independent reporting structure or oversight committee might be appropriate. No formal action was taken at the May 7 meeting beyond the staff commitments to produce the minutes and follow up on the hiring process.
