Weber School District approves committee to name new statewide online program

The Weber School District Board authorized formation of a naming committee to recommend a formal name for the district’s proposed statewide online education program and to follow the naming process in policy 6,600.

District staff member Nick Harris told the board the district has submitted a Statewide Online Education Provider (SOEP) application to the State Board and requested authorization to initiate the naming process. Harris said, “We have submitted our SOEP application to be reviewed by the State Board,” and described an accelerated timeline tied to state review.

Harris outlined next steps under policy 6,600: form the committee, run a community survey for names, review survey results, and return to the board in June with recommended names after at least two weeks on the agenda. He said the district had a survey ready to distribute and noted the committee “will meet one or more times.”

The board moved to establish the naming committee and approved the motion by voice vote; a second was recorded in the public record. The board chair indicated the committee will present candidate names at the June board meeting so the board can take final action after the required notice period under policy 6,600.

District staff said their SOEP application is under review for the State Board’s upcoming meeting; staff also said they plan to identify an administrator for the program after approval. No final program name, administrator, or specific launch date was announced during the meeting.
