Riviera Beach council schedules separate public meeting on proposed paid parking for June 17

The item drew repeated calls from council members to give the topic dedicated time because they said it is contentious and likely to attract many speakers. "This is a very serious issue because people will have to pay for parking," Chairperson Shirley Lanier said as council discussed whether to keep the item on the regular agenda or set a separate meeting.
Council members said many business owners and residents had come to the meeting and that a single regular meeting slot could run late and not permit an orderly, full discussion. Council members asked staff to publish the special-meeting notice and directed that public comment cards already submitted would still be accepted for the June 17 meeting; staff also encouraged those present to speak during the public-comment period that night if they wished.
Council did not debate or vote on the substance of any paid-parking policy at the May 7 meeting. Instead, members agreed the special meeting should include a full staff presentation on the parking proposals, expected revenue impacts, and implementation details so the public and the council could question staff and stakeholders in a single forum. The clerk confirmed the meeting location and staff said they would prepare the required notices.
The June 17 meeting was set by motion and second and approved by roll call. The council invited business owners who were present to place their comments on the record at the June meeting if they preferred not to speak during the May 7 public-comment period.
The special meeting will provide more time for staff to present revenue estimates and for the public to ask questions about exemptions, permit pricing, enforcement, and how revenues would be used — topics council members specifically requested be included in the forthcoming presentation.
