Veterans service office reports increases in monthly compensation and retro payments for April

Veterans Service Officer Todd reported to Codington County commissioners on the office’s April workload and benefit activity, including increases in monthly compensation and retroactive payments.
Todd said his office had 98 open claims and 104 claims pending action at the VA for the month of April; he reported 102 completed claims year to date for the county. For Hamlin (a neighboring jurisdiction mentioned), he reported 13 open claims, nine pending and two completed year to date, and that his office had completed six claims for 17 veterans living outside the county so far this year.
Todd reported an increase in monthly compensation for April of $4,650, with year-to-date increases just over $39,000. He said retroactive payments for April totaled $21,684 and that year-to-date retro payments were $324,668. He explained that retro payments reflect claims filed months earlier that the VA later completes and pays back to the claim’s effective date.
Todd reviewed upcoming events: meetings with veterans’ organization commanders, flag placement and Memorial Day services on May 26 at Mount Hope and St. Mary’s (times to be announced), and a Veterans Information Event planned for July 19 at the South Dakota National Guard Readiness Center on Highway 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with Sioux Falls VA departments expected to staff information booths. He also noted travel and training plans for VSO staff.
Todd said the local CBOC (Community Based Outpatient Clinic) remains a valuable resource and described two recent instances in which exam providers conducted in-home compensation and pension exams for veterans; he said those occurrences were atypical based on discussions with state VA contacts.
