Upper Cape composting effort draws county officials to Nantucket tour as towns weigh regional food‑waste plans

Barnstable County commissioners and municipal officials are planning a field trip to Nantucket this week to review the island’s solid‑waste and composting facilities and to discuss regional food‑waste management and recycling, Commissioner Forrest said May 7.
Forrest, vice president of the Cape and Islands Municipal Leaders Association, said Friday’s trip will include a tour of a composting facility, discussions with military partners at Joint Base Cape Cod and a chance for municipal officials from multiple Cape towns to compare approaches. He said Cape officials, including composting advocates like Carrie Purcell, are engaged in planning a potential Upper Cape composting project and that municipal interest appears to be growing.
Commissioners and staff discussed the importance of early adopters — Forrest noted Wellfleet and Dennis as past municipal leaders on solid‑waste contracting — and said progress by several towns could encourage wider participation. Officials also pointed to existing town programs that collect food waste from schools and restaurants as examples of local efforts.
The tour and discussions are intended to inform county policy and potential collaboration among towns, waste managers and the military, and commissioners said they would continue to follow development of the Upper Cape plan and related funding or partnership opportunities.
