The Tuscaloosa Historic Preservation Commission approved a certificate of appropriateness on May 7, 2025, for a white wooden picket fence in the front yard of 1 Oakwood Court in the Oakwood Court Historic District.
Applicant representative Wesley Jones described the proposal as a painted white wooden picket fence intended to secure the yard for the property owners who live out‑of‑town. He said neighbors and foot traffic had prompted the owners to seek a visible front boundary: "they're just wanting to do this to kinda secure their yard, because their daughter lives here and they live in Georgia out of town." Jones also said pickets will be approximately 3.5 inches wide with gaps roughly 3–4 inches, and posts will generally be 10 feet apart except where noted near two existing historic markers.
The application specifies the fence will be 53 inches tall at the post caps and 43 inches at the lowest point, with a 3‑foot gate at the front walkway. Site dimensions shown to the commission indicate roughly 107 feet of fencing along Sixteenth Avenue and about 55 feet along Oakwood Court.
Commissioners discussed neighborhood context and the presence of some front‑yard fences on Oakwood, noting that adjacent properties do not have fences and that spacing and finished side orientation mattered to the district’s visual character. Jones confirmed the finished side of the fence will face outward. After brief discussion, the commission voted to approve the request; staff reminded the applicant that any changes to picket density or other details must be reviewed by city staff before construction and that a final inspection will be required.
Outcome: application approved; staff to perform final inspection and review any proposed changes to picket density or spacing.
