Mentor City Council on May 6 approved two personnel-related ordinances: one amending the code to adjust the pay grade for part-time building inspector positions, and another authorizing merit-based increases up to 3% for non‑bargaining unit employees.
Ken, city staff, told council that part‑time building, plumbing and electrical inspectors perform the same duties as full‑time inspectors and that aligning hourly pay with full‑time rates will help attract qualified applicants. “We really have to be paying in the same hourly range as we would for our full time employees,” Ken said, describing recruitment challenges.
Adam, presenting the non‑bargaining compensation item, said the ordinance allows merit-based increases up to 3% for non‑bargaining full and permanent part‑time employees and that the change is consistent with the city’s collective bargaining wage increases for 2025.
Council approved both ordinances by roll call.
Why it matters: the measures change compensation policy for inspectors to aid recruitment and allow management to grant modest merit increases for non‑represented staff consistent with union wage changes.
