Dalton to seek flood-relief funds, street resurfacing bids after residents report repeated flooding

The Village of Dalton will work with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) on a flood-relief project, conduct a village-wide evaluation of aging storm infrastructure and pursue funding to address priority blocks, engineer Ron Smith said at the May 7 board meeting.
“MWRD…will be sending out a survey and questionnaire to all village residents to provide details of extent of flooding in your area,” Smith said, and he told trustees he would work with the new administration on identifying improvements and funding sources.
Smith said the village is planning street resurfacing this summer and expects to go out to bid by the end of May. He also cited potential funding opportunities he said the village is pursuing: up to $1,000,000 for operating expenses, $100,000 for hydrant and valve replacement and roughly $312,000 for infrastructure improvements; he noted the specific infrastructure projects still must be identified.
Trustees also approved the village’s 2024 hazard mitigation plan during the meeting. The board voted, by roll call, to adopt the plan as presented; trustees did not amend it in the session.
Mayor Jason House and trustees said the post-audit evaluation will prioritize blocks and produce cost estimates so the village can schedule work and seek grants. No project-specific contracts were awarded at the May 7 meeting.
Residents who reported flooding in public comment were told to expect the MWRD survey and follow-up from village staff. The engineer said that results of the village-wide evaluation will drive the order of work and funding requests.
