Board OKs Centralized Student-Data Agreements; Digital signature to be held by District Data Officer

The South Huntington Board of Education voted Wednesday to shift many vendor student-data privacy agreements onto a regional centralized contract platform and to authorize the district’s data protection officer to sign those standardized agreements digitally.
Miss Kavanaugh, who identified herself as the district’s data protection officer, summarized the background: New York’s Education Law 2-d requires districts to secure data-privacy assurances from vendors, and the district currently negotiates many agreements separately. "The state has partnered with the RICs and created an Access for Learning Student Data Privacy Consortium," she said, referring to the A4L SDPC program designed to centralize vetted, negotiable agreements that districts can adopt. She said 24 of the district’s current vendor agreements are already in the consortium and the number is expected to grow.
Under the approved change, agreements available through the consortium will be handled through the platform and signed electronically by the district’s data protection officer; agreements not served by the consortium will still be presented to the board for review. Miss Kavanaugh said the shift is intended to reduce repetitive negotiations and speed up procurement while preserving board oversight for non-consortium contracts.
Board members voted in favor of the change. The administration said it will provide the board with a list of which vendors and agreements the district signs through the A4L SDPC platform.
