City reports 52.6% low‑to‑moderate income on CDBG sample; Route 66 revitalization work to start

Vinita staff told the council May 6 that a state‑required sample for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application returned a 52.6% low‑to‑moderate income (LMI) result, meeting the threshold for eligibility for the grant program.
City Administrator Mr. Prince described the survey process: the grant administrator provided a randomized list of 350 addresses drawn from the city—s utility accounts; city staff reached about 200 by phone and door‑knocked the remaining targeted addresses, leaving door hangers where necessary. “After doing door knocking and, of course, at that time, we'd leave door hangers if they weren't home... after the calculations, we came in at 52.6, so I mean, we are a low to moderate income community,” Prince said.
Prince said the CDBG application will move forward and that it will be several months before award decisions are announced. He also reported that work on the Route 66 revitalization project at 502 South Wilson is set to begin with demolition and local contractors; Kyle Fritz is serving as general contractor and city crews will perform some demolition work in kind.
Councilors thanked staff and said the revitalization project is expected to progress through the fall, possibly into early next year, depending on timing and contractor schedules.
