The Vinita City Council on May 6 accepted a $10,000 donation from the Cherokee Nation to the Vinita Police Department and authorized staff to spend those funds on equipment and supplies for the city—s 9‑1‑1 dispatch center.
Chief Johnson told the council he had applied to the Cherokee Nation to help pay for smaller items not covered by a larger state grant for the dispatch upgrade. “I filed for this grant to help out with the 09:11 dispatch... I reached out to Cherokee Nation to try to get grant money to kinda help supplement that. And so, they they have granted it, and so I'm just asking for your folks' permission to accept it,” Johnson said.
The council voted to accept the donation and later authorized use of the $10,000 to purchase missing items for 9‑1‑1. Council members said it is city practice to formally accept donations and grants so they may later be appropriated to specific projects.
Separately, the council approved an invoice for $10,932 from CMC Rescue Inc. for a two‑day Arizona Vortex class; staff said the cost will be covered by a SAFER grant that funds volunteer firefighter training and recruitment.
