McLean County approves intergovernmental agreements with Bloomington for animal control and warden services

The McLean County Finance Committee on May 7 approved intergovernmental agreements with the City of Bloomington for animal control sheltering and warden services.
Ms. Thompson, director of animal control, told the committee the agreements are intended "to protect the community, help prevent the spread of rabies, assist with the removal of stray animals in certain circumstances, and assist the municipality with animal control services and sheltering as outlined in their recommended agreements." She asked the committee to approve the sheltering and warden-service contracts.
Member Fagan asked whether the amounts paid under the agreements would cover the county's costs. Administrator Taylor answered that the figures were negotiated with the city and do not yet cover a percentage of total costs but that the agreements include built-in increases and represent "a great step in the right direction." The committee voted to approve both agreements.
Thompson also presented program updates: staff are pursuing spay/neuter resources and incentives with rescues and partners; a Wishbone Canine Rescue clinic for rabies vaccination and microchipping went well; animals have been adopted or transferred; and staff toured the new shelter facility in advance of a planned move. Thompson said staff were "giddy" about the new facility and looked forward to the transition.
The committee approved the shelter and warden agreements in open session.
