Skamania County’s safety committee presented two incident reports to the Board of Commissioners on April 22 and the board took separate votes on each committee recommendation.
Incident 25-ED-005 involved a county driver whose vehicle mirror was struck by a passing truck while the county vehicle was in motion. The supervisor initially assessed the event as unpreventable; the safety committee concurred. A commissioner moved to approve the committee’s conclusion and the board voted in favor.
Incident 25-ED-006 involved a county vehicle that scraped a concrete wall while backing from a tight parking spot. The supervisor and the safety committee deemed the incident preventable. The committee recommended refresher training on safe backing procedures, use of spotters in constrained areas, and reduced reliance on older high-mileage vehicles without backup cameras. The board voted to accept the recommendation and requested that the safety committee and department managers follow up on training and vehicle-use measures.
Ending: The board approved both safety-committee determinations; the committee will coordinate defensive-driving and backing refresher training and follow up on any reimbursement for equipment damage insurance claims.
