Crystal Mountain tells Pierce County Council it’s more than a ski resort — highlights youth programs, buses and military outreach

Crystal Mountain representatives told the Pierce County Council on April 28 that the resort operates a suite of year-round community programs that officials say increase access to outdoor recreation and support the local economy.

The resort said it was founded in 1962 and described itself as a year-round operation with summer and winter activity; Matt Darvas, speaking for the mountain, said the resort operates the only gondola and the only mountaintop restaurant in Washington and called Crystal Mountain “a community, not just another business.”

Darvas told the council the resort employs just under 900 people when fully staffed and said about 140 are full-time, year-round employees; he also described a separately counted group of roughly 300 “career seasonals” who return year to year. He provided facility counts the council could use for planning: about 300 rooms used by ski clubs, roughly 150 privately owned condominiums, and about 37 home sites; he said the resort’s overnight, for‑hire lodging capacity is roughly 330 rooms, of which about 87 are currently in regular use.
