San Juan County weighs joining America250 celebration; council seeks tribal and public input

Erin Andrews, San Juan County communications coordinator, briefed the county council on America250, the nationwide 250th-anniversary commemoration for 2026, and described four preliminary asks from the Washington State committee.
“First is to partner with the state committee. It's free — we sign up, we put our name in and we get added to their website,” Andrews said. She also said the committee requested a local planning committee, use of the America250 theme at the county fair (which requires approval by the fair board) and local events recognizing Flag Day, July 4 and Constitution Day.
Council members said they were open to participating but urged caution and consultation. Council member Paulson said staff workload and energy are a concern and that any obligations should fit county staffing capacity. He also urged consultation with tribal governments: “I would want to actually hear from those partners, as to their feelings of this engagement and how does it work with their tribal governments.”
Chair McPhee said the county should ensure celebrations are inclusive and reflect the full history of the region, and recommended more public participation: “I would encourage us to put this on another agenda and highlight that it's a topic of conversations so that we have the opportunity for the public to provide input.”
Council directed the communications coordinator to contact the town, the Chamber of Commerce and other community groups to see if a collaborative planning approach and public forums could be organized before the county commits to specific activities.
