EB's Road residents press Island County for flashing speed sign after fatal crash

Liz Sherman and neighbors asked the Island County Board of Commissioners to install a lighted, flashing speed-warning sign on EB's Road, saying the community has requested the sign for more than a year after a fatal crash at a curve.

"We have been asking for a lighted flashing sign for well over a year," Liz Sherman said, explaining the road crew had temporarily installed a counter and speed-limit sign last year and then removed it. Sherman said the curve is not obvious to drivers and that a father places flowers where his son died, and coaches and neighbors plan to submit supporting letters. She described children, older residents, and track-team runners who use the road and said daytime speeding is a particular concern.

Commissioners acknowledged the request and said a speed study and other safety analyses are pending for the road. One commissioner said they had re-requested a speed study and would bring safety concerns back to the board for consideration. Commissioners also said they would ask the sheriff's office to increase enforcement at busy times, such as when ferries discharge vehicles.

Sherman provided an observational detail about a motorcyclist she timed at 4 seconds over a half-mile stretch, and she said community members will continue to press for a flashing sign. The board recorded the concern during public comment; no formal action was taken at the meeting other than the commitment to schedule further review and a pending speed study.
