Selectboard reviews scenic byway signage concepts and narrowed Depot Street plan; asks for clearer renderings

The Selectboard reviewed proposed signage concepts and plan changes for the scenic byway and Depot Street project, and asked the engineering team for clearer visuals and placement options.

Joe (town manager/chair) told the board the Depot Street scope has been reduced: paving shown on rear property areas has been removed from the design because of testing schedules and potential contamination concerns. Engineers presented signs that included a covered kiosk and a recycled kiosk from a previous overlook. Staff said two large message-board signs and two smaller kiosk signs are proposed, plus smaller interpretive signs.

Board members asked the design team to provide street-level “head-on” renderings to better assess sightlines and pedestrian safety at the Depot Street kiosk. One member raised concern that large signs near the sidewalk could obstruct pedestrian sightlines when motorists pull into traffic; the engineering team said placement options are being considered and could be shifted further up the road.

On appearance, members preferred a timber-frame look for the main sign rather than a lighter framed option; staff noted the timber-style frame would better suit the town’s aesthetic. The project team will supply additional visualizations and consider reducing the number or size of signs in the immediate approach area.

Ending: Staff said they would meet with consultants this week to finalize schedule and budget considerations and suggested a placeholder public hearing on May 19 to keep the project on track for federal funding and required public input.
